What Are Tradable Renewable Energy Credits?
Recent years have seen a premium placed on renewable energy services and commodities. Renewable energy is based on measurable electric generation and offsets to electric generation derived from energy sources other than fossil fuels. These fuel sources include solar and energy as well as biomass and methane destruction from facilities like landfills and sludge digesters. Advances in technologies now allow offsets to be derived from some devices designed to improve efficiency and are being recognized as renewable energy credits.
Renewable energy credits have a marketable value and can be sold to end users. These end users are utilities needing to meet renewable energy requirements set by their states, private companies meeting corporate commitments to renewable energy, and private citizens. Credits can be bought and sold through Tradable Renewable Energy Certificates or through private contracts.
