Genesis Point, Georgia

ESI performed an intensive survey across the approximate 2,300-acre Genesis Point property in Bryan County, Georgia. There were 83 archaeological sites documented at the property, including one prehistoric village that was over one mile long. Twenty of the sites were recommended for further work to evaluate their NRHP eligibility status and an intensive Phase II evaluation program was initiated in late 2006.  Of those 20 sites, 11 were determined to be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.  Four of the significant sites have been preserved insitu, while the remaining seven have been mitigated during Phase III data recovery investigations.  These studies have generated a large amount of knowledge regarding the prehistoric and historic occupants of the Georgia coast, including the Willington, Irene, Altamaha, First Spanish, and early American periods.
